Union criticizes Black Cove shrimp plant closure in Canada - Undercurrent News

The permanent closure of a processing plant in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, after it was completely destroyed in a fire last year is devastating for the community, according to a union leader representing some 75 fish plant workers in Black Duck Cove, CBC reported.

The Black Duck Cove plant was owned by Gulf Shrimp, a joint venture between Royal Greenland's QuinSea Fisheries, and Quinlan Brothers.

Eva Applin, a representative with the local United Food and Commercial Workers chapter, said Gulf Shrimp has the resources to reopen the plant but is refusing to do so, despite promising to keep the entire workforce employed after a fire at a shrimp plant last spring.

The company made its closure official in a media release last week, saying poor shrimp quotas that the company won't sustain reinvestment in the facility.

Although shrimp stocks are falling, the lobster fishery is thriving, Applin noted, suggesting the plant is being used to process lobster instead.
