Trade insights: China's November shrimp imports increase 14% to 76000t - Undercurrent News

China’s November direct imports of frozen shrimp increased 14% to 76,000 metric tons, including both warmwater and coldwater shrimp, according to latest trade data, marking a new record for the country.

The value of imports grew 13% compared with October to $462 million, the data from Chinese customs shows. In total, China imported 68,000t of warmwater shrimp and 8,000t of cold water shrimp, up 10% and 60% compared with October respectively.

The previous record month for imports was January 2019, prior to Chinese New Year, when direct imports topped 74,000t. This did not include undocumented shrimp imported through Vietnam.

In November, almost two-thirds of China shrimp imports came from Ecuador and India; Ecuador supplied 34,500t, up 14% month-on-month, while India supplied 15,000t, up 20%.

Meanwhile, supply from Thailand, China’s fourth-largest supplier in November, grew 88% month-on-month to 3,700t.

Imports from Malaysia grew 40% to 1,000t, while imports from Argentina and Vietnam slipped 42% and 15% to 3,200t and 4,200t respectively (see chart two).

In November, China’s biggest supplier of Pandalus borealis shrimp -- a coldwater species -- was Greenland with 2,700t, followed by Canada with 2,900t.

The value of imports per kilogram to China was, overall, relatively stable compared with October; the average unit value of warm water shrimp imports slipped $0.02 per kilogram to $6.18/kg.
